The container

Eating healthy isn't just about what goes in your food. It's also about what your food goes in.

Heat, light and the wall it rests against all change a smoothie after the blade stops. None of the three appear on an ingredient list.

There is a particular kind of care that goes into a morning smoothie. The berries were chosen. The protein powder took an evening of reading to settle on. Somebody in the house has an opinion about the collagen. The greens are there because a nutritionist, a podcast or a stubborn friend made the case, and it worked.

Then all of it goes into a cup that nobody chose. It came in the box. It is whatever plastic the manufacturer had a mould for. And the drink sits in it, on a desk or in a bag, for the next three hours.

That last part is the interesting one. A smoothie is not a finished object the moment the motor stops. It is a warm, wet, acidic mixture with a lot of exposed surface area, and it spends far longer inside the container than it spent inside the blade. Whatever the container does to it, it does for hours.

Beast Health, the blender company started by the founder of NutriBullet, has built a stainless steel line around exactly that gap. What follows is what the company publishes about it, what the engineering actually does, and what people who bought one say after a few months of use.

Part one

The part of the recipe with no ingredient list

Beast makes its case for blending in general with three numbers on its own about page, and they are worth sitting with before we get to hardware:

Which is the argument for owning a blender at all, and most people reading this already made that decision. The question further down the road is different. Once blending is a daily habit, the marginal thing you can improve is no longer the recipe. It is everything that happens to the recipe afterwards.

Three things do, and they start the second the blade stops turning.

The blade gets all the attention in blender marketing. It has the drink for a minute.

Part two

Heat, and why a cold blend does not stay cold

A blender is a friction machine. A motor spins a blade fast enough to tear frozen fruit apart, and a good part of that energy leaves as warmth. You started with ice and frozen berries precisely because you wanted the drink cold and thick. Sixty seconds later some of that is already gone.

Then the drink sits. In a thin single wall of clear plastic, it is separated from a warm kitchen by one thin layer of material that conducts heat happily in both directions.

Beast's answer is the part of the product that is easiest to feel and hardest to see. The stainless vessel is not a steel cup. It is two steel walls with a vacuum between them, the same construction used in a good insulated flask, sized to sit on a blender base and take a blade.

What the company claims for it is specific, and it is the reason the vessel has a name rather than a part number:

On its comparison page the company puts a number on it: the stainless vessel is described as keeping blends cold for up to 12 hours. That is a long time for a drink you meant to finish before lunch, and it is the claim owners test first.

The second review is a four star review, and the rest of it is a complaint about chia seeds clumping. It is here on purpose. The cold claim is the part of the product that even a partly disappointed owner confirms without being asked.

Part three

Light, and a claim most blender brands would never think to make

This is the one nobody brings up, and it is the reason this page exists rather than another comparison of wattages.

A clear jar is a window. Whatever you blended is now sitting behind glass or plastic, lit for as long as it is out. On the stainless product page, Beast states plainly what the steel wall does about that:

Read that as a design brief rather than a slogan. It says the company decided the container had a nutritional job to do, not only a mechanical one, and then chose a material that could do it. A transparent vessel cannot address this at all, however good the plastic is. It is the single variable where the choice of material is the whole answer.

The one thing a clear jar cannot fix

Beast lists three properties for the steel vessel: it insulates, it blocks light, and it does not react. Only the first has an approximate equivalent in plastic.

Part four

Reaction, or why yesterday's garlic is still in the jar

Anyone who has made a pesto and a smoothie in the same week knows this one without needing a diagram. Some materials hold on to what you put in them. Acidic blends, alliums and strong spices leave a memory in a plastic jar that survives a dishwasher cycle, and after a year the jar has a personality.

Beast addresses this directly in the questions section of its stainless page:

The company frames the whole vessel as an environment rather than a cup, which is an unusual thing for a blender brand to say out loud. Its own summary of the three jobs, in its own words: maintain temperature, block light, preserve the taste of your ingredients.

Part five

So what is the wall actually made of

Two materials, and Beast is unusually plain about both.

The stainless vessel is 304 grade steel, the grade Beast prints under the vessel in its own size comparison. The clear vessels are Tritan, and on its compare page the company lists both materials as free of PFAS, BPA and BPS. That is worth stating precisely, because the shorthand people use in conversation, plastic bad and steel good, is not what the company claims. It claims both materials are clean, and that steel adds three things plastic cannot: insulation, light blocking, and a non-reactive surface.

The honest caveat, from the reviews

Buyers who came for an all steel kitchen keep raising the same point, and it is fair. The lids, the carry cap and the straws in the box are plastic. One reviewer bought the Mighty specifically to use the steel vessel and discard the rest, and was annoyed to find the matching lid was black plastic. Another gave three stars for the same reason before buying.

There is a straightforward route around it that the reviews never mention: the 700mL stainless vessel and storage lid is sold on its own for $35, and Beast lists it as compatible with the Mini 600, the Mighty 850 and the GO. If you already own a Beast, the steel upgrade is a vessel and a blade, not a new machine.

Part six

The machine has to earn the vessel

An insulated cup on a weak motor is a nice cup. What makes the rest of it hold together is on Beast's design and technology page, which is one of the few pages of its kind that states what the alternative does instead. Four of the entries matter for a daily blend.

Twelve ribs instead of a smooth wall

Beast's vessels carry 12 internal ribs, 3 large and 9 small. The page says competitors use smooth interiors or up to 3 small ribs, and gives the reason: the ribs create more turbulence and friction inside the vessel, which is what actually breaks a frozen chunk down rather than spinning it in a circle above the blade.

Why a smooth jar leaves lumps

Copper coils, and gearing that is not plastic

Two entries on the same page are about durability rather than performance, and they are the ones that decide whether a blender is still good in year four. The motor coils are copper rather than aluminium, which Beast describes as a better conductor and tougher. And the gearing that connects the base to the blade is stainless steel where, in the company's description of the alternative, it is plastic that can corrode and wear over time.

Beast's own line about it is the best sentence on the page: this chain of energy transfer is only as strong as its weakest link.

The chain, and its weakest link

Power leaves the motor and reaches the food through three couplings. Beast makes the middle one out of steel and says the alternative is plastic that can corrode and wear.

Thicker walls, and one button

Beast says its blending vessels are around 2.5 times thicker than most, and explains why that matters in a way that has nothing to do with feel: a vessel that warps loses its seal against the blade, and a vessel that has lost its seal leaks when you blend.

The control scheme is the last piece and the one owners mention unprompted. There is one button. Press and hold it for a second and the machine runs a 60 second cycle on its own, programmed in three intervals with brief pauses so the contents fall back onto the blade between them. You walk away.

Great product! I needed to replace my Nutri-bullet. The Beast is a superior replacement. I love blending into a travel container with a spill proof lid and straw. The auto blending cycle where it automatically shuts off after a minute is awesome. I can do other things and I don't have to go back to shut it off too early or too late. I'm loving it!

Which one, honestly

The stainless line comes in three sizes and the difference is power and capacity, not quality of blend. Beast says so itself: all three use the same blending system, and the stronger models simply get to a smooth result faster with a bigger load.

Here is the number that decides it, and it is buried in the specification table rather than on the sales copy. The 700mL steel vessel has a blending capacity of 500mL, about 17 ounces. Total volume and blending capacity are not the same thing, and the fill line is there for a reason.

If your everyday smoothie is a cup of liquid, a banana, a handful of frozen fruit and a scoop of protein, 500mL is tight. This is the single most common complaint in the reviews, and it is not a complaint about the machine:

Love it, but too small for average size smoothie

I loved the stainless steel and thought it worked great, but it didn't fit the smoothie I make every day, so it had to go back. I had a NutriBullet before and should have checked the size better. My smoothie is a cup of liquid, a banana, a few strawberries, two or three leaves of kale and some protein powder, and it did not fit in the 850.

So: measure your usual smoothie once, in the glass you drink it from. Under 16 ounces, the Mighty 850 is the right machine and the one Beast itself recommends for most people. Over that, buy the Mega and stop reading comparisons.

Part eight

What owners say once the novelty is gone

The stainless line carries a rating of 4.5 out of 5 across 85 reviews on Beast's own product page, which is where all of the quotes on this page come from. Read past the five word ones and a pattern shows up: people talk about the counter, the dishwasher and the mornings, not about the blend.

Hands down the best blender out there!

I've had the Mega 1200 for a few months now and it's the only appliance on my counter that earns its space. Smoothies are actually smooth, no grit, no chunks of frozen fruit hiding at the bottom. I make one most mornings and it takes about a minute start to finish. The vessel goes straight in the dishwasher and the blades rinse clean under the tap. I've owned blenders that were so annoying to wash I stopped using them. That's not this one.
